Day in the Life of a Talents Within
Camper
Each
day begins (8:00 a.m.) and ends (4:00 p.m.) by transporting
the children via bus (The Magic Bus) from Regent Park,
Parkdale and the Jane corridor to High Park. At 9:00 a.m. we
proceed to the High Park pool for 45 minutes where our
counselors teach our campers Red Cross Swimming lessons. Each
camper has the potential to proceed through a swimming level
throughout the 6 week session. At 10:00 a.m. the campers are
instructed in their talent activity (Baseball, Tennis or
Soccer) for two hours every day for the 6 week session.
Each
week the campers participate in a variety of afternoon
activities which occur from 12:30 - 3:00 p.m. each day. A few
of our activities include drama workshops supported by Can
Stage, martial arts instructed by the JKD centre, canoe and
kayaking taught by Echo Adventures Canada, Cricket supported
by the Canadian Cricket Association, a voyageur canoe trip to
Toronto Island donated by the Harbourfront canoe/kayak,
woodworking, fishing, orienteering, berry picking, hiking,
rock climbing at the University Settlement, visiting seniors
at Grenadier Retirement Lodge, meeting a few players and
attending a Toronto Argonauts game, and of course designing
and building soap box derby cars to race at our end of year
potluck picnic.
This
summer we were fortunate to partner with the Humber Sailing
Club, where each camper sailed a 30 ft sail boat 3 times. The
campers were instructed in the basics of sailing. Many of the
children found their talent in sailing thus encouraging the
goal of Talents Within. The instructors and skippers from the
Humber Sailing Club donated their time, energy, care and
patience to the campers and designed an amazing summer
program. Thank you to all our contributors and supporters.
